Did you know that running ALONE is not a complete workout?
Running does very little for upper body strength. For a total body fitness makeover, it is important to add cross training with weights or other aerobic exercises (such as swimming, biking). This helps build supporting muscles that will make you stronger and a more efficient runner.
When you incorporate plyometrics to your running routine you get the explosive power to help you on your runs before, during, and at the end (when you need the final kick) of your runs!
Even better, running while pushing a jogger is BOTH cardio AND strength. You get an excellent upper body strength workout when pushing a stroller on your run. DOUBLE BONUS: you burn up to 38% more calories running while pushing a jogger! Super cool!!
Knowing this fact encourages me to continue hitting the pavement, with or without my jogger. I am doing my body, my mind, and my FAMILY a great service when I run… alone or while pushing a jogger.
Adding strength to my workouts has greatly improved my running. I feel stronger, FASTER, and less fatigued.
I am currently doing the 100 push-up challenge, 200 squats challenge, 200 sit-ups challenge, and 300 lunges. It is a 6 week training plan where you do a series of sets/reps three times a week. At the end of the training period you should be able to complete 100/200/200/300 consecutively.
Week 4 Day 3 (Body Strength Circuit for Friday):
Push-Ups (knee down) | 23 – 28 – 23 – 23 – 33 |
Squats | 40 – 45 – 40 – 40 – 55 |
Lunges | 20 – 20 – 20 – 20 – 20 |
Sit-Ups | 45 – 50 – 45 – 45 – 60 |
I am on a health and fitness journey, and am working on transforming my WHOLE self (inside and out). Fitness and strength is only one part of the equation. Remember, there are many factors that help with the success of a positive transformation.
Keep moving forward. Keep moving. You will be stronger, healthier, and happier for doing so!
While you are at it… knock two birds with one stone by getting your cardio AND strength workout completed when including your children (pushing a stroller/jogger).
