The year 2012 is well on its way. We are six weeks in to the new year and I have implemented a small change each week. Each small change builds upon one another to help me with my goal of living a healthy and active lifestyle.
So far in 2012, I have made 6 healthy changes and have continued those changes the following week(s). I have made a commitment to eat a healthy breakfast upon waking (every day), drink more water (atleast half my body weight in ounces), take a daily multivitamin, eat more fiber (atleast 25g) , record my food in a food journal and last week’s goal to increase my protein.
This week I have been extra aware of new and fun (tasty) ways to get protein during my day. I have enjoyed Odwalla bars, Vega bars, and adding hemp hearts to my meals.
I was sent a bag of hemp hearts by Manitoba Harvest to review. I was super excited because it arrived just in time for my protein goal week. I am already a big fan of adding flax seed to my meals… but had never heard of hemp hearts.
Did you know that hemp hearts are the highest in protein, contain rare omegas, you don’t have to grind and are low in carbohydrates!? Basically it is a super food for your brain! Which is super cool!
Seed | Protein | Omega-6 | Omega-3 | GLA | SDA | CARBS |
Hemp Hearts | 10.0g | 8.0g | 2.5g | 384mg | 128mg | 3.0g |
Flax | 5.6g | 0 | 4.5g | NA | NA | 9.6g |
Chia | 6.3g | 1.8g | 6.8g | NA | NA | 12.3g |
I have found that when I have focused on increasing protein each day, I am less hungry. Of course, I am eating more fiber, drinking more water, eating a whole healthy breakfast and more. But I think protein has something to do with it too. I am less tired and ready to tackle my day. Yay for protein!
Continuing on with the small changes each week, I will be adding a new healthy focus this coming week.
This week my healthy change focus will be:
Get Five Square Meals a Day
Developing a regular eating schedule helps keep you satisfied throughout the day. Also, having a plan to know what you are eating (and are going to be eating later) will help you ME stay on course for success.
Baby steps. One small change at a time!
Do you plan your meals ahead?
What are your favorite easy meals and snacks?

I’ve never heard of hemp hearts, but they sound like some powerful stuff! Good for you making healthy changes! I’m trying to do the same lately. I just started being more diligent about meal planning and I think it makes life so much easier.

Hemp is totally under appreciated although it seems as if it is getting more popular these days, which is great because as you said, they are super high in COMPLETE protein and high in omega-3 fatty acids!!! Just munch on them as a snack, lol, they’ll certainly fill people up!
