Life as a mom is always an adventure. Today is no different. From time to time I like to share with you what an average day in the life of Running Rachel looks like. It isn’t anything special our out of the ordinary. It is quite simply, one mom to three little boys, running through life one day at a time… often late… often with loud encouraging voices… often gritting her teeth trying to share a smile. Life is an adventure.
I start my morning a little before 6AM. I usually get a quick kiss from my husband as he rushes out to start his work day at 5:45. I try to be super quiet and not wake anyone else. However, this morning wasn’t quite so successful. My oldest son (an early riser) woke just as I was sneaking downstairs to start my day.
I prepared my coffee and my oldest son’s breakfast, sat at the kitchen table and did my devotional. I am doing the James study by Beth Moore with a local church. It is good!
I spent the rest of the morning (6-8AM) pretty much in the kitchen… eating! I finished my day’s study. I prepared breakfast (multiple times). I cleaned up breakfast (multiple times). I prepared lunch (only for him to decide last minute that he wanted hot lunch).
When I wasn’t a made order chef in the kitchen, I did a few chores. I started and switched a load of laundry. I folded the laundry that was dry over night (only for my husband to place those folded clean clothes on the floor tonight for bed!).
Quickly we rush out the door at 8AM to get C to school on time. We make it just as the bell rang!
We have some time to kill before our next activity. We decide to walk Target. Goodness I love Target! I think it is no surprise that Target has a Starbucks INSIDE! Wow! They were thinking smart when they made that decision! Mom friendly, one stop shop!
Before my latte got cold, the two little boys and I head to a new pediatrician’s office for a meet and greet. Holy paper work batman! The staff was super friendly, but my goodness… that appointment took longer than I was hoping (or my patience allowed).
We eagerly went to the gym. The boys were able to get their much needed wiggles out in the play area… and I busted out a few easy miles on the treadmill.
I am somewhat training for the Nike Woman’s half marathon, which is in two weeks! Today’s training plan called for a 6 mile tempo run. I busted it out on a treadmill. I did a comfortable 4 miles. The other 2 miles I did a slower pace but upped the incline to a 10, to prepare my legs for the hills of San Francisco.
I had a bit more time to spare before I needed to pick up the boys from child care, so I did a quick 30 minute strength session with free weights.
The boys and I rush home (do you see a pattern of rushing and being late!?) and we have lunch, I hang laundry on the line, and we do some school.
The boys school is pretty simple. We reviewed our letters, practice writing, colored, read books, cut paper, and went on a letter hunt. Nothing over the top today… Wednesday’s are crazy busy!
We check the clock and rush to pick up C from school. We get there just in time. Whew! Who knew that loading and unloading… then dragging pushing encouraging 2 little tired boys to walk fast … 3 blocks… could be such a challenge!
The littlest man falls asleep on the way home. Great! T takes a nap, and the two big boys enjoy a snack, fight, do homework, argue, color, fight, play.
We spend the majority of our afternoon in the kitchen eating.
We have an early dinner (although I do not know why as we have been eating from 2-5) and head out to Awanas. The boys are in Puggles, Cubbies and Sparkies. It is an adventure to get them all signed in and to their leader on time!
I am a Cubbie Leader, and hang out with five little four year olds. Yes, God and the Awana director has a sense of humor in the fact that I am surrounded by little boys all.day.long.
At the end of the night, we trudge home… exhausted, tired, and just plain ‘ole done with the day. The big boys greet Daddy and head to bed (no fighting or arguing as they are eager to rest). However, the youngest little man who enjoyed his nap this afternoon still wants to party and play.
As I type this it is 10PM … WAY PAST HIS BEDTIME (and mine for that matter). He is not asleep in his bed, however, he is comforted by the sound me typing on the keyboard… as I see that he is finally passed out on the floor right behind my desk chair.
I must call it a night. Put this tired little two year old to bed, and this tired 32 year old Mam to bed also. Because tomorrow is a new day… another adventure in parenting!

I totally love this post! I love seeing your day – it is so different from mine, yet I can relate as my life was a lot like that during my maternity leave. Some days I miss it, and other days I am relieved to go to work. I do think that being a SAHM is WAY harder and I applaud you for the great job you do in raising three wonderful little boys. You’re awesome!
