Like many of us, the new year brings many people wanting to get back on the health and fitness bandwagon. Many people (myself included) have health and fitness goals. Some health and fitness goals might include: losing weight, start running, start walking, being more active, try crossfit, join a gym (or actually use the gym membership they currently have), lift weights, or just start a fitness routine.
Whatever your fitness goals for the new year, if you own a smart phone, there are many fitness apps to choose from. I have many fitness apps that I personally use on my phone to help hold me accountable, motivate me, and help me plan my workouts.
I have narrowed my favorite fitness apps down to five. I am sharing with you my five favorite must have fitness apps to help you reach your health and fitness goals for the new year.
Whether your goal is to get off the couch and begin a couch to 5K program, or increase your fitness level. These apps can help you reach your fitness goals!
iSmoothRun – This app records your fitness activity: walk, run, bike, hike, even treadmill! You can set up specific workouts to notify you as you run/walk (couch to 5k program or a speed/tempo run). You can also set up auto pause for when you stop at stop lights or pick up a dropped toy out of the stroller.
One of the things I also like about iSmoothRun is that you can export each activity to your fitness log (daily mile or even gym-pact!).
Gym-Pact – I am new to using gym-pact. I am also new to being a member of a gym. Gym-pact is an app where you make a pact (putting money on the line) promising to workout a certain number of times a week, or you pay money into a pot. When you do workout and complete your pact you earn money.
Check out GymPact! Work out with me and we both get $5. Signup with code: boxsqRache
I have been using gym-pact for a few weeks now, and have earned $12.34 for just doing what I would normally do… workout at the gym (or run outside using my app iSmoothRun (that syncs to runkeeper)! Plus this helps hold me accountable when I have a dreaded case of the I don’t wannas).
Nike + GPS – I am a big Nike+ fan for recording and logging my runs. I have been using Nike+ since I received my first ipod (not that long ago). This is a pretty simple and straight forward app. I use it to RUN and record and log my RUN. It is not as high tech or involved as iSmoothRun… but it does provide a community within the Nike Community.
Nike Training Club – Can’t make it to the gym? Not a member of a gym? Not sure what to do once you are at the gym? This app is perfect for you! You can choose from many different styles of workouts (yoga, stretching, strength, cardio and more) to meet your fitness plan. Plus you earn rewards for working out! This is a great FREE fitness app that will challenge you to work hard!
WOD Genius – WOD (workout of the day) Genius is my new favorite fun fitness app. I have been using this on my cross training days when I just don’t want to hit the free weights or machines. I want something fun, challenging, and engaging for my brain! This is the app. If you have been wanting to try crossfit or some of the WOD’s… this is for you!
You can fully customize your own WOD by the equipment you have on hand, time you have to workout, or even completing some of the famous HERO WODs! In fact, I just used it yesterday to complete a super quick for time WOD that was a full body QUICK 5 minute WOD.
Whether your fitness goals are to begin a plan or to challenge yourself to reach a new goal… I think these five fitness apps will help you reach your goal! If you have any questions about what the apps do or would like more information, feel free to ask in the comments (or tweet me @RunningRachel ).

Love this! GymPact looks really cool. And WOD Genius sounds awesome too. I will have to check if Android has these apps. As of right now, they don’t have the NTC app. =(. Sad face. Thanks for sharing!

Love NTC! If I’m traveling it’s one of the tools I use to get my workouts in. Most require no or very little equipment, making it perfect for hotel rooms or ill equipped gyms.

I totally downloaded GYM PACT! But I cannot use it until I get back to Los Angeles since they don’t accept “home gyms”!! 🙁 But when I get back to LA, it’s ON!! I will NEVER have to pay a cent either because my willpower is ridiculous!
**I cannot wait to make some $$ for doing what I love! It’s such amazing incentive too! Look at you go!!

You will be $5 richer shortly. Just signed up for Gym-Pact. I rarely miss a workout so why not!?!

Yay! Thanks 🙂 That is what I thought too… I love to work out and rarely miss a workout. Why not earn some pocket change while doing what I would normally. 🙂
