LIFE is one GREAT ADVENTURE… especially when your name is MOM. Yesterday I met my friend and her two youngest boys at the park for a fun-filled morning at the park. We had grand intentions to get a quick WOD in while the boys played at the splash pad.
We succeeded in getting a workout in… as well as any mama can workout when her children are underfoot. While the boys enjoyed the sunshine and splash pad the mamas got our heart pumping with a burpee/squat filled WOD.
As with MOST workouts when children are involved… our workout was paused a few times to count kids, calm a tired baby, count kids again, and more. #MotherhoodNEVERrests
Today we found that we were leading by example (not only for our own boys… but also for the oddly crowded park full of kids and parents too!!). My oldest son kept remarking how everyone was looking at us. I smiled and said, “That is okay. We are not doing anything wrong. We are just working out. They are more than welcome to join us!”
The parents and kids just walked around us as we did our burpees and squats. I think I even remember a few older boys chanting burpees as we completed our last set. I would like to think they were secretly cheering for these two tired mamas because they knew how spent we were.
I am thankful we could get our heart pumping, burn calories, play catch up, enjoy the sunshine, watch the boys play and have fun, giggle and start our day off with a bang.
I enjoyed my park workout with my friend and her little men. I have a feeling this summer will be incorporating a lot more park workouts as the boys will need to get their wiggles out too. If you are in the area and want to join in on the park workout fun… we would love to have you!
Fit Mamas and our Fit Boys working out at the park. Always a great adventure!
Burpees… oh how I love to hate you! Hurts so good and so effective! Full body workout… I totally feel it in my core as I type this morning.

I quickly found out that I have zero upper body strength, aka burpees are almost impossible to do (let alone try to do correctly). I can’t do a pushup to save my life haha
Rachel says
I am with you, sister! I have very little upper body strength (but very strong lower body… hello runners legs and strong quads!). I have noticed that the MORE I do burpees… the BETTER I do them… and the MORE I actually LIKE them! 🙂 I actually go all the way to the ground now! Pure craziness! 🙂
Eliza Ferree says
I’d rather do squats. But proud ya’ll did this in a public park, I know not many would and the fact your kids joined in is just awesome.
Rachel says
Yes. Thank you. When we started there wasn’t many kids/parents around… but once we got started the crowd came… it was a bit humbling at first, but we just continued on. 🙂
Leah says
I tried doing a burpee once…I never made it back up hahaha!
Rachel says
Haha… the great think about burpees is that they NEVER get easier. You should challenge yourself to keep trying and doing. You may surprise yourself. 🙂
Lisa @ Crazy Adventures in Parenting says
I hate burpees. Haaaate them. With all the babies I’ve given birth to, there’s hanging skin on my stomach no matter how many sit-ups or crunches I do, and it always feels too uncomfortable. I love planks, though. And plyo. But burpees make me want to throw things. LOL
I love what you’re doing with your boys!! You are SO brave to do your workout in the hot sun, too! *fist bump*
Rachel says
*swoon* Thank you. To be honest, I have that loose skin around my stomach too. It DOES make me feel uncomfortable too… because before kids I LOVED my flat stomach. (No matter how many miles I run or sit-ups I do… that loose extra skin ‘mum tum’ is still there).

Buck Furpees. Okay, now that I got that out of the way, way to get after it! I bet that was a long 20 minutes! Dare I say, I do burpees so much in class, my body does them efficiently, even if my mind is reeling with hatred 😉 Love the positive influence you’re having on those handsome boys of yours, keep it up!
Rachel says
Thanks (and yes, I have those same sentiments). I will share that after 12 minutes my friend Karen and I were already wanting to call it quits (honestly I think it was after round5 we were shooting for just 12 sets… then 15… then okay we can finish!).
Bryanna says
Those burpees!! The park near my sister’s house just put in a few pieces of outdoor workout equipment for the parents while the kids play at the splash bad. Some box jumps, elliptical, bikes, and other gadgets. It’s a great idea!! This post proves you don’t even need the equipment for a workout
Rachel says
Thanks. Yes. Many of our local parks have those same workout equipment. I find that my BOYS love those workout ‘toys’ better than I do… I prefer a body weight workout. 🙂
Running Hutch says
Yup, I’m a burpee fan! At least….I’m a fan of the first 15 and then it sucks after that. HA. As soon as my pup can leave the den I plan on doing a lot of park workouts! 😀
Rachel says
Haha.. yes… I know you are a big burpee fan! <3
Yes, your pup will be ready for park play soon enough. She is getting so big already! 🙂
Deborah Brooks @ Confessions of a Mother Runner says
Looks like you had a fun time! Burpees ah love to hate them too. They are harder than I remember everytime.
Rachel says
Yes! Always harder than you think at first!! 🙂
Raijean says
I hate burpees, we just aren’t friends.
Rachel says
Hahaha… seriously this made me laugh out loud!! Perhaps burpees feel the same way about you and you two need to spend a bit more time together? <3
deninemichele says
It’s so nice to see you getting your workout in AND hanging with the kids. 🙂
Rachel says
Thanks. 🙂
Angela S says
Great job of leading by example! What a fun way to enjoy an afternoon at the beach.
Rachel says
Thanks. We weren’t at the beach. We were at the park that had a splash pad (water feature). 🙂
Rebecca Jo says
I used to LOATHE burpees… but I’m getting tougher at them. I like they get my heart pumping & they work the WHOLE body.
Rachel says
Yes. I am choosing to embrace them because oh… even though I don’t like them… they hurt SO GOOD!
Sara P. (@SensiblySara) says
I HATE burpees! I do workout at the park – a 4 mile walk at least once a week!
Who took the pictures for you!?
Rachel says
Way to walk!! 🙂 That is great!!
I set my timer on my phone camera to take the photo of us 🙂
Melissa says
Haha, this is awesome and way to learn by example. And I feel so left out….I don’t know what a burpee is!
Rachel says
No worries. A burpee is a crazy form of torture that fitness folk tell others to do (or do themselves). 😉 Think of a plank, then push up (or chest to the ground) then get to standing and jump up!! Calorie and heart pumping craziness! 🙂
Tanya says
Burpees make me happy, angry and feel like I want to throw up all at the same time. LOL
Rachel says
Yes! That is a perfect description of a burpee… I have those same thoughts and reactions! 🙂
Kimberly Grabinski says
Burpees are about as close to death as you can coming while still breathing.
But, they do that job and do it well. I love that you did your workout right there at the splash pad.
Rachel says
Haha YES! I totally agree. 🙂
Digna D. says
I would have to agree that Burpees and I are not friends. Interesting read though. Thank you!
Rachel says
Thanks, Digna! I don’t think burpees have many friends… which is why they are so brutal. 😉
Audrey at Barking Mad! says
Oiy! My upper body aches just reading the post and looking at the photos. I don’t think I”ve ever done a burpee in my life (actually, the only “Burpee” I’ve ever heard of prior to the last 5 years, were little packages of seeds!) and it might very well kill me if I tried it.
Virginia @thatbaldchick says
I’m not sure which I hate more, burpees or planks. I guess it depends on which one I happen to be doing at the moment. LOL
Rachel says
Yes! Yes! Yes! I agree. Burpees HAVE mini planks in them… and push ups! LOL Brutal. 😉
Jennifer @ Mom Spotted says
Love it! I have a polar monitor too and it helps keep me motivated when I see hoe many calories it is burning!
Rachel says
Yes! I love my polar! I believe they make the BEST heart rate monitor products on the market. 🙂
Tonya says
The only time I have ever done a burpee was when I played basketball in high school. Oh how I hated them.
Rachel says
Yes. It never gets easier. I remember doing many suicide drills when I played basketball… oh how I hated them! 🙂
melinda says
burpees make me want to puke. i try to avoid them outdoors as I feel like a fool doing them
Rachel says
🙂 Yes. Burpees are no fun. Puking is no fun. Puking and acting like a fool in public is no fun.
Liz Mays says
Please tell me there isn’t anyone who actually LIKES to do Burpees. It’s the aftereffects we like, but the during, oh no, not that.
Rachel says
Yes! Yes! Yes!!
Marina says
Burpees don’t see eye to eye with me! Working out at the park definitely sounds fun!
Rachel says
Yes. Burpees were hard (and not fun). Working out at the park and being an example to the boys as well as enjoying the fresh air and friendship company was fun. 🙂
Andrea Kruse says
You always do such a great job being a healthy example for your boys! Ugh… the burpees are super hard on my knees.
Rachel says
Thank you, Andrea. Yes. My knees are bruised (and will look rough for a week). BUT… I guess that is one way to tell I worked something. 😉
Michelle says
Im hoping to eventually get to the point where I can DO burpees!!
Rachel says
You will. Keep practicing. 🙂
Jessica says
You are awesome! I’m 39 weeks pregnant, but can’t wait to get back to fitness in a few months. 🙂
Rachel says
Thank you, Jessica! Yes… after you have been given the all clear post-baby… have fun doing burpees while your precious little one looks on! 🙂
Heather says
I take my son to the park all the time and i did work out one time i got crazy stares.. havent done it since haha.. maybe i should try it again and stare back like “why ARENT you working out?”
Rachel says
I got those stares too! lol And yes… totally invite them to join in! 🙂
trisha says
I think I died a bit just reading this article. And is it me or does the name Burpee freak anyone else out?
Rachel says
Haha… burpees are killer. When I ask if my boys want to do burpees with me they automatically start BELCHING (that is their form of burpees). 😉
Tiff @ Babes and Kids says
Way to go! I also have a love/hate relationship with burpees but they are so so good for the core. 🙂
Rachel says
Thanks, Tiff! Yes… full body workout for sure!
Crystal Green says
What a great way to get a workout in. This looks like a lot of work, but a lot of fun at the same time. I’m sure you’re kids were proud to be there with you and a part of it.
Rachel says
Thanks, Crystal. I think my boys are so used to seeing me do ‘weird’ blogging and fitness things in public. 🙂
