I always have grand intentions to share with ya’ll my weekend adventures with my family… but then life happens. You know how it is. Sometimes we need to readjust our goals and plans… and just enjoy the moment. That was my weekend. More of a fly by the seat of your pants and hold on for the ride to enjoy weekend.
Our weekend’s always kick off in style with Friday night Pizza Night. We enjoyed Papa Murphy’s pizza, Blue moon beer (only the husband and me) and the movie Goonies.
The boys were giggling non-stop during the whole movie. I am not sure if they were giggling because of the use of some not-so-nice-words that we do not allow-use-say like sh-t or he-l. Either way. We all enjoyed this funny movie.
Saturday morning rolled in early and my husband was working. This left me with three wild monkeys who were seeking adventure… and a mommy who needed to run outdoors.
I mean look at my youngest. He is riding circles around me with his old beat up tricycle as I am attempting to take a pre-run selfie. Ya know that a running mama always needs to take a pre-run selfie because the post-run selfie is full of sweat, swass and sweat! I kid.
I load up the van with the boys bikes and we drive a short ways to our local urban trail. I had a goal of running anywhere from 4-8 miles, depending on how energetic the boys were feeling and how warm it was going to get.
At the end of our trail, we took a break at a park. The boys played and I attempted pull ups on the monkey bars. It is still a goal of mine to do one unassisted pull up … some day. Sadly, that day was NOT Saturday. My 8 year old totally showed me up like 10 times with his massive pull-up skills.
We loaded up and headed back to the car (that was parked by our gym) … the return miles always drag. I set up my camera’s burst mode app to take a photo of me running with the boys. It is normally me chasing them in single file… but if I were to document that photo I wouldn’t be in the photo. So the running photo above was staged… but they were riding and I was running. It counts, right?
Once we got to the car, we loaded our bikes and headed to the gym to swim. The monkeys apparently wanted to get out more of their wiggles and I was more than willing to let them.
They jumped. They played. They played chase. They cannon balled. They laughed and had a great time. I enjoyed watching them have a great time. It was still early (10AM) so we had the whole pool to ourselves.
Once I finally convinced them it was time to go, mama was hungry… our afternoon was a standard at-home day. I caught up on chores (i.e. laundry, dishes, playing referee, household duties).
After a much needed shower, I joined other Sacramento Bloggers at a SITS Girls event sponsored by Mirassou. It was another Blogging Boot Camp similar to the event I attended in San Francisco a few weeks ago… but these were local bloggers.
We chatted. Networked. Learned. Laughed. Learned about Mirassou and the family history of the wine. Drank wine. Paired yummy foods. Basically a great time.
Sunday morning was a rush to get to church on time and feed the monkeys. After church, I caught up on the never ending house hold chore of laundry. My boys are so messy that vacuuming after every meal is necessary. I was sporting my new Jabra ROX wireless in-ear headphones (review and giveaway live on the blog tomorrow!!).
After our lunch (and chores) were finished, my husband took the boys to the gym. He worked out. They played in kid-care. I opted to go for a power walk to the gym. It was a warm afternoon 3.75 mile walk. Nothing strenuous. Not an easy pace. Just enough to get my heart pumping. The alone time was nice too.
After the workout, we picked up the kiddos and swam. Er rather, I watched them attack, splash and try to drown my husband as I watched from my chair. This is why I don’t like swimming with the boys. They attack. They splash. They kick. They wrestle. It isn’t much fun. But they have a blast.
I attempted to teach and instruct the youngest how to swim without his monkey (float). He flipped out. Screaming. Teeth chattering. Clinging on for dear life. It didn’t go well. In fact, it didn’t go at all. We just walked the pool with him holding tight on to me like a baby monkey. Oh this one. He is something, I tell ya!
He forgave me and wanted to snuggle to warm up afterwards. Oh my children. You melt me. I will always accept little (and big) boy snuggles from my monkeys.
The rest of the afternoon/evening we watched the recorded World Cup. Then resumed our nightly ritual of wrestling the three monkeys into sleep. They are always so tired yet they always resist sleep. Why. Mommy and Daddy are always exhausted… we love sleep… why don’t they!? I am sure we will somehow get them back when they are teenagers! Right?
Weekends are always busy with fun, family, adventures and some sort of fitness in our house. Weekend adventures are what we do. Fun and adventures are what we seek. Memories are made.

I really admire how you seem to fit it all in with 3 young boys. I had a much harder time when my kids were younger and I only had 2! The highlight of my weekend was doing a relay tri with my friends and we won 2nd place-woo hoo!
Rachel says
Oh that sounds like SO much fun!! I love running relays with friends! 🙂 I haven’t tried a tri yet… I can swim, bike and run… but I have never done them all together. 🙂

Wow, what a busy weekend. We didn’t do all that much this weekend just some chores around the house that needed to get done.
Rachel says
I would LOVE to catch up on the never-ending chores around the house. LOL My boys SEEK adventure and it makes everyone happier to get out and explore (vs staying indoors). Someday my house will be clean and organized. Today is not that day. 😉

Loved this post. What a great way to show people they CAN make time to work out with kids. Oh and have fun too!
Rachel says
Thank you. Yes. It might NOT be the best workout or most intense… but you are getting something done as well as being a positive role model. 😉

What a fun family weekend! Confession – I’m 30 years old and still haven’t seen the Goonies.
Rachel says
Girl… you need to! It is a classic! 🙂
Tiff @ Babes and Kids says
What a fun weekend! I’m amazed your kids will go that long. I try to go running with the boys and they make it a mile on bikes or scooters before pooping out. 🙂
Rachel says
I think the key is having a park at the half way/turn around point. Knowing that they can get off and (work harder!?!) half way through helps ease the monotony of their ride. 🙂

What a fun weekend! Your boys seem awesome. And that blogger get together looked like it was a lot of fun!

You were busy! And keep trying for those unassisted pull-ups – they are bad-ass when women do them. 🙂
I barely remember the weekend. We did celebrate my niece’s birthday on Saturday. Yesterday was a “downtime” day, although I went to church and the gym.
Rachel says
Yes. I agree. I just want to be able to do ONE unassisted pull up. I guess I have to keep practicing them in order for that goal to happen, eh? 🙂
I love down days! 🙂

You always seem to pack so much fun into your weekends! I did yard work. Goonies and pizza is the BEST combination.
