Oh how my life has been flipped upside down the past week and a half. The comforts of home are no longer available. No gym. No warm weather. No friends (yet). No church community support (yet). No coffee kiosks on every corner (maybe that is just my observation).
I find myself singing the theme song to Fresh Prince of Bel-Air… my life got flipped turned upside down. Well, maybe that is the only part in the lyrics that I can relate to… but still I do find myself singing that catchy tune often.
Handstand Friday
Back in 2013, I did a handstand every Friday for #HandstandFriday. I challenged YOU as well as myself with these fun upside down weekly challenges. This year, 2015, I have restarted the handstand challenge. Every Friday I flip upside down and share a photo of me doing a handstand.
I promise my photos will get more creative as I learn my way around my new area. For now, I am still finding my bearings with the new area, new routine, new life here in the midwest.
To sum up how our family is feeling lately is parallel to a handstand: new perspective, uneasy, shaky, unsure of what comes next, determined, new view on life.
Our family is totally loving our new town, area, and the people we have met. We all are learning to adjust our perspective and go with the flow. Even the T-man joined in on the handstand Friday fun this week.
We wear winter jackets… and pants!
This might not be news to many of you… but the weeks prior to our move, I had to train the boys to wear pants and long sleeve shirts. These boys are used to wearing shorts almost year round… and their winter jacket is a simple fleece or hoodie.
A fleece jacket is no longer called a jacket. They are also learning that they can wear their jacket and take it off once they are indoors. They don’t have to wear a big bulky jacket all.day.long.
The boys go to public school… and ride a school bus!
After much prayer we decided to enroll our children in public school in our new town. Homeschooling through the charter had its challenges, and we felt that everyday school would be a good fit. We are also finding that our California school was behind our new school academically… which means we get to play catch up at home. So technically, still teaching at home…
We are quickly adjusting to a new morning routine which includes leaving the house on time to catch the school bus! The big boys were super excited to ride a school bus. It was P’s first time ever to ride a bus. He was to the moon excited.
It snowed!
Yes. This is a common thing for our local friends… but for our family… it was SO exciting to wake up to this morning! Waking to see the ground covered in snow AND snow falling from the sky!
The boys have been asking all morning when they can go out to play in it. I am excited to watch and see what they think of the snow: cold, wet, fun. For now, I will sit at my laptop and watch the snow peacefully fall from the sky.
Our life has flipped upside down… but God has blessed us on this move. Things are different. Lots of things will change. Change is good.
You may see me posting less frequently as our family adjusts to our new normal.
I am still trying to fit in running and training in our new town with our new normal. Right now I am trying to figure out what to wear running in the cold, snow, wind, rain. Mama isn’t in California anymore.
We are learning to be flexible and go with the flow. Viewing the world from our upside down handstand perspective while keeping a smile on our face.

Sounds like everyone is having a new adventure! I can’t image snow after not having any. I would LOVE to be somewhere sunny and warm. But the snow has it’s fun as well. I’m excited for the return of handstand Friday!

Great, now I have that Fresh Prince song stuck in my head! Lol!
Can’t help you with the cold running gear, I’m a California native as well.
Wishing you good luck and lots of happy times in your new home.

Moves can be scary, but it’s wonderful that you and your family will have all these new adventures and firsts together – like snow! I recently did a post about winter running gear if you want to check it out. I’m in NY, so I have to bundle up to run this time of year :). http://fitfulfocus.com/fit-fashionable-friday-winter-running-pieces-love/

Moving, whether its across town or across the country, always poses new challenges. But it sounds like you and your family are doing great with your new routine.

I have to admit that watching you adapt to this weather is kind of entertaining, though I admit I can’t even imagine suddenly being faced with this cold when you have never experienced it before. Your boys will remember this forever!

Yaaay! I’m so glad to hear the move is going well. We are moving in June and I’m already so nervous to essentially “start again”! So as a long time New Englander, I have tons of winter fitness tips. Mainly: layers, layers, LAYERS! You can always take them off if you get too hot, but you’ll be SO glad you have them on when you are cold! Also, wool is amazing. Many companies, like smart wool, make athletic gear. It’s sooooo cozy and warm!

It sounds like everything is coming together nicely. Change can be hard yet invigorating! I am also glad to see you reflected through prayer to make the tough decisions you had to make. Have a great day!
