The boys and I are all about making summer memories and having fun. They are also not ones to turn down a delicious dessert that is a cool sweet treat. So when Stonyfield contacted me asking if they could send me a YayLabs! SoftShell Ice Cream Ball™ to make summer memories, I said YES!
Many of my fellow Stonyfield bloggers created delicious flavored frozen yogurt. I opted for the simple frozen vanilla yogurt to try with the boys and their friends. It was an adventure, a great workout, and super tasty!
What you need:
YayLabs! SoftShell Ice Cream Ball™
Stonyfield Vanilla Yogurt (or any flavor of your choice)
Lots of ICE!
1/2 cup of rock salt
If you are going to flavor your ice cream/yogurt and add goodies, mix your ingredients in a separate bowl. Then put the ingredients in the large side of the YayLabs! ice cream ball (white lid).
Make sure your ball is tightly screwed shut, or else you will have your yummy goodness spill out.
Turn your ball over and fill with ice. It takes a lot of ice. It looks smaller than it really is! Once filled, pour in 1/2 cup of your rock salt.
I set the ball up myself while the kids played outside. I put the ingredients in the ball, in attempt to not make a huge mess. It didn’t help. I made a huge mess anyway. Pouring and adding the rock salt was a messy job.
Once the ball was prepared, the kids and I took it outside for some rolling fun games.
We started out with a big circle in the driveway. We didn’t realize how heavy the ball was and how hard it actually was to roll. So we made a tighter circle.
We played a little ball soccer for a few minutes too (video here) … using only our hands. No kicking, bouncing, or dropping the ball. Only rolling.
After 10 minutes of rolling was up, it was time for me to use a wooden (or plastic) spoon (no metal!) to scrape the sides of the ice cream forming. It was fun to see it start to freeze and take shape. After scraping the sides… it was time for 15 minutes more rolling. (I found that 10 minutes was too short and 15 minutes almost too long).
When it was time to roll again, we took it to the hill. We created a relay of sorts helping push the ball down and up the hill. After a while they decided that the person at the bottom of the hill would push it up the hill and RUN to the top of the hill to be at the top. This went on until the timer went off.
We went inside and opened up our ice cream ball to find delicious, organic, home made frozen yogurt.
I scooped the frozen yogurt in mugs for the kids to enjoy. It was a perfect fun afternoon sweet treat on a muggy afternoon. They worked hard rolling the ball to make ice cream!
The kiddos enjoyed the sweet cool frozen yogurt with a topping of their choice. The adults opted for a healthier version of organic berries top top their frozen yogurt. Yum!
We had a great time making our own ice cream using the YayLabs! SoftShell Ice Cream ball with Stonyfield yogurt. It was a great workout as it got all of our hearts pounding. When just shaking it and standing up, you can totally feel it in your shoulders, abs, back, and more! This was a fun way to work for your sweet treat!

This is such a cool idea (no pun intended). My kids are all about ice cream and rolling stuff around, so this is such a wonderful fit for my family. Thank you for introducing me to this! – Jerusha, CitrusSwirl.com

Too fun! And if only I always burned that many calories before eating frozen treats. Hehehe.

What a great idea! Love this ball and that you can make froyo so easily. I had a crank ice cream maker before we moved onto the boat so left it in the house when we sold it. This look like so much fun.

This looks like a lot of fun! I love making my own frozen yogurt & ice cream because I can control the ingredients. My favorite is peach fro yo!

How cool is that?! Awesome that you get to play while simultaneously making ice cream! I blend up frozen bananas to make “ice cream” but this is way more fun!

That’s awesome! I’ve never seen anything like that before. Although I think its possible it may have limited value. I bet its a lot of fun the first few times you make it but after a while the kids may be bored of the ball rolling game 🙂
