Back to school is in session (for us here in the Midwest). The boys have been in school for two full weeks. This means that we have had two weeks to slowly get back into our school routine . I know that many bloggers recommend making school lunches the night before, but I find that tip doesn’t work well for our family. We make our lunches the morning before school.
I find that teamwork is great when prepping the boys lunches. They get out and make what they can, and I double check the contents to make sure it is healthy and balanced. I also like to sneak in a few things that make it special (a mothers touch). Today I am going to share with you five tips, that work for our family, for making your child’s school lunch a happy lunch.
Involvement
Involve your kiddos with the making and preparing of their lunch. Have them help you make their lunch. I have found that when my boys take ownership of making their lunch, they are more apt to eat and LIKE what is prepared each day.
My oldest can pretty much make his own lunch (with guidance or else he would choose all snacks and not substance). My youngest is able to make his own sandwich and with guidance and instruction is able to make a healthy lunch.
Lunch Notes
My boys (and I) love lunch notes. These notes can be handwritten notes on a napkin, on a banana, or premade ones you can find on pinterest or #BeBox.
I know that I, as an adult, love finding and receiving love notes randomly throughout my day. Whether the notes are from my children or my husband. What a great gift of words of affirmation to your children while they are away at school. I think this is one of my favorite things in their lunch box each day.
Pick Favorite Foods
Have a discussion with your children about what they DO want in their lunch and what they do NOT want. Picking their favorite foods is great because, as a mom, you know that they will eat their lunch!
For my boys, they love the cheesy crunch of Pepperidge Farm® Goldfish Crackers. I love that there is a variety of yummy flavors to choose from: pretzel, extra cheddar blast, colorful goldfish, and whole grain.
Balance Choices
Balance is good in all areas of our life. This is specially true with creating healthy meals for our growing children. I try to include something from each food group in their lunch: protein, complex carbohydrate, fruit/veggie, healthy fat, sweets. Yes, I include a sweet treat because I find that a little sweet teachers them about balance (a little in moderation is okay).
Our go to lunches tend to be a sandwich (today was PB&J), goldfish crackers, fruit (grapes & peach), brownie muffin (Udi’s Gluten Free) and a YoKids Stonyfield yogurt (we like their tubes too).
Keep Hands Clean
I find this to be very important in the prevention of spreading germs. We all know how well (or not so great) kids wash their hands. My boys LOVE to share germs… and by including the Wet Ones singles in their lunch every day, I hope to STOP the spread of germs before they eat. They can wipe their hands and even their place at the table with the wipe.
Wet Ones® Singles are a necessity in every kid’s school lunch, cleaning hands and killing 99.9% of germs, so they can enjoy their awesome lunch!
