My boys will be heading back to school this week. We are all very excited for the back to school routine and starting our new normal. I am excited to get back in to my fitness routine, without the kiddos. It has been super fun exploring, biking, hiking, and fitting in fitness with the boys this summer… but I am excited about running solo and with new friends.
I am excited to get back in to a running and training program using my polar, lifting weights on a regular basis, and continuing my focus on nutrition. As my boys gear up for a new and exciting new school year, I plan on using the Walgreens Balance Rewards for healthy choices app to stay on track with my health and fitness goals. Every time I record a meal or workout on myfitnesspal I am getting points for my healthy choice. Yay!
In preparation for the boys back to school and Mama’s falling back in to fitness, we made a trip to our local Walgreens for some must have falling back in to fitness essentials.
Do you think my boys are blogger kids? They know how to pose, right!? Ha! Our Walgreens was ready for me with their bi-fold encouraging me (and others) to join their free Balance Rewards program.
Walgreens launched Balance Rewards for healthy choices in an attempt to help its 80+ million loyalty cardholders modify behavioral risk factors associated with the most urgent public health issues. You too can make every healthy choice rewarding. Looking to manage your weight, exercise more often, quit smoking or boost your overall health? Regular tracking can help you reach your goal. The Balance Rewards for healthy choices initiative rewards members for walking, weight management and more. Get points today for your healthy activities. Start today at Walgreens.com/healthychoices
Walgreens is even placing helpful products such as these in their store end caps, making it easy to find and to keep up that healthy lifestyle. Right now you can earn 2,000 Walgreens Balance Rewards points ($2 reward) when you buy any two J&J Healthy Essentials participating products through August 29, 2015
The boys and I headed to the back of the store to find what Mama was looking for. I wanted to grab a few Johnson & Johnson Healthy Essentials products that I knew I would need as I bump up my fitness regimen in a few days. Hello Motrin, Neosporin and blister guard band-aids!
After taking it pretty easy this summer with regards to my fitness routine, I grabbed a few essential items to help me get back in to my fitness groove.
Fitness Essentials for Getting Back in to Fitness
Supportive Shoes – Whatever sport or fitness activity you will be doing, you need to make sure your feet are properly supported. Make sure you are fitted correctly for the activity you will be doing: running, walking, hiking, crossfit, or other. Healthy feet are happy feet!
Blister Gel Guard Band-Aids & Neosporin – Sometimes when you break in new (even awesomely fitted) shoes, blisters will happen. This could be from breaking in new shoes, your socks, or just toughening up your summer feet. I know the Blister Gel Guard band-aids have come in handy multiple times for my family and me.
GPS/Heart Rate Watch – This is my must have accessory with regard to my fitness. I love and use my Polar M400 daily. This watch has GPS and records my distance, Heart Rate to make sure I am effectively working as I run/lift, and even daily activity monitoring to make sure I don’t sit all day long.
Weights – Find a variety of weights to challenge you and grow your muscles. I have found my weights on clearance at department stores as well as garage sales. The wider range of weights you have the wider range of muscles and reps you can do!
Motrin – This is my last resort (I don’t medicate often), however muscle soreness and aches happen. I grab Motrin when my joints and muscles ache after a few days and need something to help the inflammation.
As the back to school hustle and bustle starts, I am planning on getting back on track with my health and fitness goals using the Walgreens Healthy Balance Rewards program.
I plan on running 3 times a week using the free training plan from polarpersonaltrainer.com. I also plan on lifting heavy weights 2-3 times a week. My goal is to still work on decreasing my body fat % while increasing my muscle mass. Focusing on nutrition will still be a major focus as this is the area I need the most help in.
Check out Walgreens for more information on how YOU can earn points (rewards = money) for your healthy and active choices.

Your boys are definitely little budding bloggers – perfect poses! haha – Let’s see back to fitness essentials would definitely be good shoes and a shiny new water bottle 🙂
Ange @ Cowgirl Runs says
What a great initiative to encourage healthy choices!
I would say my FitBit and shoes would be my essentials.

Great tips!
Definitely good shoes, and I will also vouch for awesome socks.
Now that my guy is back in school, it’s easier. I can hit some daytime boot camp type classes and when the weather cools down, I can run after I drop him at the bus stop, rather than having to get up at 5 to get it done.
Deborah @ Confessions of a Mother Runner says
Now that my kids are older my fitness routine doesn’t change too much when school starts. I know it does for you! Enjoy!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
As a teacher, I’ll have the opposite problem once school starts again – fitting in my workouts after a long day at school. And while in my third trimester of pregnancy. This should be interesting!

Good shoes for sure are essential, plus a plan! Anytime I get back into something/do something new I need a week-by-week plan to make sure I have something to follow for when things get busy!
Margo says
My must-have item is the iPod. Without it I can’t work out. I need my tunes!
Becki S says
Ooo, I’ve never used those blister band aids. I wonder if they would work on some new work shoes I just got. Thanks for sharing. Best of luck with back to school!

That’s a great idea for Walgreens. Any brand that encourages their customers to make healthy decisions has my purchase. I’m definitely in! Thank you for letting us know

Yeah, back to school time can seem like a new start for lots of things. For some reason I thought you home-schooled your boys… and yes, they do great poses! 🙂
Enjoy your new normal!
Rachel says
Thanks. Yes. We did homeschool when we lived in California. We prayed about it and decided to put them in public school here in Missouri. They have THRIVED and we really love the school/teachers. 🙂

School starts here next week! I just took the kids to the dentist then shopping for school supplies today. Once they go back there will be no more 5 am workouts for me. I’ll be able to move them to a little later in the morning. I will miss the outdoor lap pool too.
Debbie @ Coach Debbie Runs says
Your boys! They look like little charmers! It’s been a long time, but I remember that feeling when my boys went back to school. It’s freedom!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
That little guy in the front has it going on!
Go easy on the neosporin. I see a lot of patients in the clinic with a hypersensitivity (allergic) reaction to it. Not a fan.
Diatta @ Femme Fitale Fit Club says
I’m glad to say my workout routine won’t change that much with the kids heading back to the school. I have stayed out of boot camp for a while because it takes up too much time when I get home but I do miss it and with that workout I would need some of those items you listed above because he is INTENSE!

Your boys look like such bundles of joy.
Patty @ Reach Your Peak says
that picture of your kids with the sign is so cute! This is a great list. I had to pop some ibuprofen just now actually because my shin is killing. Glad another runner can relate bc I’m not sure if that is considered “healthy” to do or what?
I also should carry bandaids with me at all times, I get blisters at the randomest times sometimes!

I wish I could get into running and a running routine. I have been walking in our old abandoned mall space with my boy, so maybe someday! [client]

My workouts won’t change much with my kids going back to school. But, I’ve gone back to work at that has meant big changes. I’m adjusting to PM workouts. For a serious morning person that’s tough.
