I am a sucker for infomercials. I love them. I think they speak the truth when they advertise their product. So it isn’t surprising that I decided to jump on the Topsy Turvy tomato planter band wagon. Heck, I heard great things about them from people I knew in real life too!!
However, I am sad to report that my review of this product is not a positive one.
Yes, you CAN and WILL grow tomato plants. My tomato plants (I planted 6) did grow and produce MANY MANY leaves.
However, because it is such a small container – with my six thirsty tomato plants all fighting for nutrients, soil and water – I had to water it 3 times a day. I also had to make sure that I fertilized it once a week. This made it a very high maintenance plant!
The two pictures below are what my poor plants looked like after being left alone in the California heat (100*) and sunshine all day … this is after I gave it a good soak that morning.
The most bummer part of this planter that they rave about is the abundance of produce that this planter will help produce… WRONG! I had TWO green tomatoes grow from the ENTIRE 6 plants!!
TWO
That is not a successful tomato planter, in my honest opinion.
I have two shady lady tomato plants in their own planters on the deck (same location as the topsy turvy) and they are plentiful with their produce.
I do not recommend spending $10 – $50 for this product. You will have more success planting your plants in a garden, raised garden, or even individual pots!
Disclaimer: I was not compensated for this post. The opinions and views are from my own experience and are mine. Upon further reflection, I probably would have had success had I only planted ONE plant in this planter. However, the instructions made it appear that you could plant as many as you wanted.
