I am all about saving money… and still learning the ropes with living a green lifestyle. I have been searching the web for some easy homemade laundry detergent recipes for a few weeks now. A few of my girlfriend’s have made their own (liquid)… and I knew that I just had to try to make my own.
How to Make your own homemade powdered laundry detergent:
- 1 cup – Borax
- 1 cup – Arm & Hammer WASHING Soda
- 1/ bar – Fels-Naptha Soap
- Grate your bar of soap. I used my cheese grater and it worked great. Plus it is a great arm workout!!
- A word of warning… if you have small children who love cheese be prepared for them to demand kick scream want cheese. No amount of explaining that the soap is not cheese will do. {sigh}
- I put the grated soap in my food processor ready to mix and refine even further for future steps.
- Pour your 1 cup borax and 1 cup washing soda in the food processor.
- Grate your ingredients in the food processor to blend together and chop up the soap further.
- You will be able to see when the detergent is mixed and finely ground. It smells fresh, clean and honestly… like real (store bought) laundry detergent!!
- Store in a container (I chose a pretty air tight container).
- One load of laundry is 1 Tbsp of your new powdered detergent!
** You can substitute the bar of soap for equal parts (1 cup) of powdered oxy clean.
** This smells SUPER clean and REALLY does clean my clothes just as good as Tide!
Making my own laundry detergent works for me and is my frugal Friday find!

I make this same stuff, and love it! You really don’t need 2 TBL /load, though. I use 1 tsp and it works just as well.
